Sleep Train Charity Golf Classic Results 2012
Themed Annual Fundraising Event Donates Cash to Ensure Foster Youth Can Participate in Extracurricular Activities
SACRAMENTO – October 4, 2012 – Sleep Train, the number one mattress retailer on the West Coast, hosted its 6th annual Charity Golf Classic on September 26th to raise money for foster youth. The fundraiser collected a record-breaking $600,000 to provide foster children with the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities like playing sports, learning a musical instrument, going on a class field trip, or attending summer camp, where they are often reunited with siblings. This year’s event puts total donations at over $2 million since the event began six years ago.
The private 80s themed fundraiser drew in more than 400 participants who wore their best decade-inspired attire including leg warmers and MC hammer pants and featured an eighteen-hole golf tournament, costume contest, and live dinner auction.
“While the theme was fun, the reason for the annual fundraiser is serious – raising money to help current and transitional age foster youth participate in those life events that help shape us all, as well as assisting emancipated youth who are aging out of the foster system,” said Dale Carlsen, CEO and Founder of Sleep Train. “Within 18 months of aging out of the system, up to 50% of foster youth become homeless. An experience such as playing on a sports team can create a competitive nature and provide the self-confidence that helps them persevere on their own.”
Donations from the event are being distributed to these West Coast foster youth agency programs:
- Child Advocates of Placer County – Simple Heroes Program
- Alternative Family Services (AFS) in Northern CA – Extracurricular Activities
- Promises2Kids San Diego – CampConnect & The Something Special Fund
- Olive Crest in WA – Extracurricular Activities
- Christian Community Placement Center (CCPC) Oregon – Extracurricular Activities
“Common sense and research shows that participating in extracurricular activities greatly improves a foster child’s quality of life, gives them hope, instills important life skills, and offers a sense of belonging,” said Child Advocates of Placer County. “Foster kids dream of participating in activities like their peers, but often can’t because it’s too costly. Sleep Train’s event donations will make these dreams a reality.”
The Sleep Train Charity Golf Classic drew participants from all over the United States including representatives from Beautyrest, the presenting sponsor, Sealy Mattress Company, Tempur-Pedic®, Leggett & Platt, Pure LatexBLISS, Serta Mattress Company, Progressive Finance, and DSI Delivery. The company is also currently hosting its Dollar Drive for Foster Kids through November 4th, which helps fund fun, healthy and educational activities for California’s foster youth. Donations in all denominations can be made at any Sleep Train location or online.
